Peter Collinson (botanist)

Peter Collinson (* January 1694 in London, † August 11 1768 in Brentwood ( Essex ) ) was an English botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Collinson ".

Life

Peter Collinson is the son of a draper Peter Collinson and his wife Elizabeth Hall. He attended the Quaker school in Wandsworth. Together with his brother James, he took over the family business and expanded it by an intensive trade with the American colonies.

Hans Sloane strengthened his interest in insects. Its gardens in Peckham and Mill Hill were known for their exotic plants, which he often cultivated first. This is especially true for submitted by John Bartram from the eastern United States. He corresponded with Benjamin Franklin, Carl Linnaeus and many other scientists in America and Europe.

On December 5, 1728 Collinson was elected to the Royal Society. He was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the academies in Berlin and Uppsala.

He died of strangury.

He named in honor of his correspondent Carl Linnaeus, the genus Collinsonia from the plant the mint family ( Lamiaceae).
