Peter Scholze

Peter Scholze ( born December 11, 1987 in Dresden ) is a German mathematician and professor at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. He deals with the intersection of number theory and algebraic geometry ( arithmetic algebraic geometry).

Life

Peter Scholze grew up in Berlin and attended the Heinrich -Hertz -Gymnasium in Berlin -Friedrichshain. In International Mathematical Olympiads, he won three gold medals and one silver. After his graduation in 2007, he studied mathematics at the University of Bonn. He completed his bachelor's degree in three semesters, his master's degree in two semesters and was subsequently awarded a PhD in 2012 with the theme Perfectoid Spaces with Michael Rapoport. Since July 2011 he has been for five years a Fellow of the Clay Mathematics Institute.

In the winter semester 2012/2013 Scholze was appointed to one of the Hausdorff mathematics professor at the Cluster of Excellence in Bonn. His field is the arithmetic algebraic geometry under the Langlands program. Due to its extraordinary achievements for not using a habilitation procedure.

Scholze gave a new proof of the local Langlands correspondence ( first proved in 2000 by Henniart, Harris and Taylor). He introduced in his thesis a new technique ( Perfektoid - rooms), which allows attributable number theoretical questions over local fields of mixed characteristic to those with only one characteristic. An application is a more general formulation of the theorem Almost Impurity by Gerd Faltings in the p- adic Hodge theory. In addition, this technique enables other problems, for example in Shimura varieties and Rapoport -Zink spaces, a geometrical interpretation.

Scholze 2013 was awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize.
