Peter Vermes

Peter Vermes (2011)

Peter Vermes ( born November 21, 1966 in Willingboro, New Jersey ) is a former American football player. During his active time he played both on the position of the striker as well as a defender.

Youth

Vermes played football on the Delran High School in Delran, New Jersey. By its completion in 1984, he scored 109 goals. He was honored by the newspaper The Star-Ledger as one of the ten best high school players in the 80s in 1999.

In his first year at college played for the Loyola Greyhounds Loyola College in Maryland. A year later he moved to Rutgers University. There he spent the next three years. In 1987, he played beside for the Philadelphia United German - Hungarians.

Club career

After his college degree Vermes went to Europe and played there for Raba ETO in Hungary and FC Volendam in the Netherlands. He was the first American ever to play in the first division of Hungary and Holland.

In May 1991, Vermes returned to the U.S. and played with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the American Professional Soccer League. In the same year he moved to the second Spanish League to UE Figueres. There he played from 1991 to 1995, where he was loaned in his last year at New York Fever.

In 1996, when the Major League Soccer was introduced, he played for the MetroStars and was its captain in the first MLS season. On February 3, 1997 Vermes against Kerry Zavagnin was traded by the Colorado Rapids. There he played until 1999. His last three active years he spent with the Kansas City Wizards.

In the 2000 season, Vermes was voted best defender of the MLS. He also won this season with the team to the MLS Cup.

National

His first international match Vermes graduated on May 14, 1988 against Colombia. Overall, he played 67 times for the national football team of the United States. With the national team, he participated in the 1988 Summer Olympics, the FIFA World Cup 1990 and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1991.

For the World Cup 1998 he was in the extended squad, but was not nominated for the final selection.

With the U.S. Futsal team, he finished in 1989 with the first Futsal World Cup third place.

Coaching career

On 15 November 2006, Vermes new technical director at the Kansas City Wizards. Previously, he worked as a broadcaster for the San Jose Earthquakes, was a technical trainer at the Blue Valley Soccer Club in Overland Park, Kansas, and was assistant coach of the U -20 national team of the United States.

On 4 August 2009, he was interim coach for the Wizards after the previous coach Curt Onalfo was dismissed. Under Vermes, the team has enjoyed some positive results, but still only managed 6th in the Eastern Conference.

Since November 9, 2009 Vermes head coach of the team that have been called since the end of 2010 Sporting Kansas City.
