Peter Walker (bishop)

Peter Knight Walker ( born December 6, 1919 in Leeds, † December 29, 2010 in Cambridge ) was a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Ely.

Peter Walker attended Leeds Grammar School and then studied up to the intermediate examination 1940 Classical Studies at Queen's College at Oxford University. Walker then joined the Royal Navy and served until 1945 in the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. In 1945 he returned to the University of Oxford, where he studied further with a focus on ancient languages ​​( Litterae Humaniores or Greats ) to its conclusion. From 1947 Peter Walker worked as a teacher at the King's School in Peterborough and then from 1950 at the Merchant Taylors ' School in Northwood.

In the academic year 1953/54, he received a priestly training at Westcott House, Cambridge, he returned to his ordination, but at the Merchant Taylors ' School, where he continued to teach until 1956. He then took over in Hemel Hempstead his first church as a priest. In 1958 he was appointed as a priest and theology, however, a teacher at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1961 he returned to the Westcott House. Peter Walker led the Westcott House from 1962 until 1972, he was appointed Suffragan Bishop of Dorchester. At the same time he was at this time a priest of Christ Church College, Oxford University.

1977 Peter Walker was appointed as Bishop of Ely. In this capacity, he was until 1989 a member of the House of Lords. The twelve years that Walker was Bishop of Ely, were a difficult time for the diocese. The number of priests dropped points according to the number of believers from 230 to 165 and the Cathedral of Ely had to be painstakingly restored. Above all, Walker it is thanks to this that it was possible within two years to secure the necessary sum of four million pounds, which also came from the diocese in half.

Peter Walker was a friend and adviser, among others, WH Auden as well as the then Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie appreciated. Walker, whose theological views were influenced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and 1996 was the head of the International Bonhoeffer Society of the British section. Walker published a single book under the title The Anglican Church Today: true Rediscovering the Middle Way as a summary of his views.

Peter Walker was married in 1973, he had no children.
