Peter Jeffrey Kelsay " Jeff" Wisoff ( born August 16, 1958 in Norfolk, Virginia, USA ) is a former American astronaut. He is currently working at the National Livermore Laboratory in northern California.

Wisoff 1980 received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in 1982 and in 1986 his PhD in applied physics from Stanford University. During his studies at Stanford and then at a faculty of Rice University he researched and developed various applications in the field of laser technology.

Astronauts activity

In January 1990, he was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate and then trained as mission specialists.

STS -57

On 21 June 1993 aboard the space shuttle Endeavour Wisoff to his first flight into space. The main objective of this mission was the recovery of the European Retrievable Carrier satellite ( EURECA ). In addition, for the first time was the Spacehab to carry out various experiments on board. During a space phasing two antennas have been run by EURECA of Wisoff along with David Low.

STS -68

For the STS- 68 he flew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on September 30, 1994 in the space. It was the second flight of the Space Radar Laboratory. The two main instruments on board were the SIR-C/X-SAR ( Shuttle Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and MAPS (Measurement of Air Pollution from Satellites ). On October 11, the space shuttle landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

STS -81

On January 12, 1997 Wisoff flew aboard the space shuttle Atlantis to the Mir space station. The focus of the material transport and exchange of a crew member stood. Scientific experiments were in the middle deck of the ferry, others were housed in a Spacehab double module.

STS -92

On 11 October 2000 Wisoff flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station. Also on board was the Z1 truss segment and the Pressurized Mating Adapter PMA- third Wisoff participated in two of the four spacewalks together with his colleague López- Alegría. At the first exit they mounted the PMA -3 and in the second it took before final adjustments to the Z1- grid and then tested the SAFER -called rescue system for astronauts.

Other activities

2001 acquisition Wisoff retired from NASA and went to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ( LLNL ). Until recently, as principal deputy ( deputy principal ) working, he took over with effect from October 1, 2013 by Ed Moses the role as Deputy Director ( principal associate director ) of the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science ( NIF & PS ) Department at LLNL.

Private

Since the end of 1999 Wisofff is married to astronaut Tamara Jernigan.
