Peter Ziegler

Peter Alfred Ziegler ( born November 2, 1928 in Winterthur, † July 19, 2013 in Binningen ) was a Swiss geologist.

Life and work

Ziegler in 1955 received his doctorate at the University of Zurich with Rudolf Trümpy in geology and then was an exploration geologist in the oil industry, first for French and U.S. companies in Israel, Madagascar and Algeria, then for Shell in Canada, from 1970 for the Shell headquarters in the Netherlands, where he oversaw the oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. As part result he published in 1982 the Geological Atlas of Western and Central Europe (Shell and Elsevier ), published in 2nd edition 1990.

In 1988 he went to Shell to retire and in 1992 an honorary professor at the University of Basel, from 1996 as a professor of Global Geology. He also taught at the Free University of Amsterdam. He was involved in several international research projects, including as the initiator and coordinator of the Eucor Urgent project 1999-2008, which dealt with the evolution and tectonics of the Upper Rhine Graben.

He dealt with intra -plate tectonics and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins ( with applications in petroleum geology ) and the Phanerozoic development of Europe.

Still in 2013, he spoke as climate skeptics would prefer that no carbon dioxide but the sun is responsible for global warming. In other climate skeptics he prepared to front a special issue of Energy and Environment.
