Pharyngeal consonant

In phonetics, Pharyngeal describes the articulation of a sound. In a pharyngeal is a narrow throat, the pharynx, is formed.

The International Phonetic Alphabet has two pharyngale consonants. You do not occur in English and are typical of the Arabic language.

The tongue is retracted and tense the neck muscles. The voiceless pharyngeal [ ħ ] sounds like a pressed H; the voiced pharyngeal [ ʕ ] ( Ayin ) sounds almost like an O.
