Piano duo

Piano is the name for two pianists at one or two pianos.

History

Designated since the 17th century composers both their vocal and their different vacant instrumental pieces as a duet or as a duo, if these were to be interpreted by two singers or instrumentalists of 2. Compositions for two harpsichords and, later, pianos or piano four hands were also commonly called Duo. In the 19th and 20th century the number of pieces took too, which were composed for two pianos, with or without accompanying instruments, or for piano duet.

The term piano duo in today's parlance, however, does not refer to the shape of the composition, but on the two- piano ensemble performer. Here is a linguistically marked contrast to the piano trio, in which both the composition can be meant as well, which consists of three musicians ensemble.

The repertoire of original compositions for two pianists is not very extensive. So it is not surprising that even compositions for other ensembles, chamber music or orchestral, in the transcribed for 2 pianos or piano four hands are happy and very successfully included in the concert programs of today's piano duos in large numbers.

The interaction of two pianists is technically extremely difficult. It requires a precise match to the smallest detail of the game mechanics that can be generally achieved only after a long time playing together. Frequently, therefore, have siblings, including a married couple, come together for the long term scheduled.

The worldwide first and only chair of piano duo was at the 2012 HMT - furnished Academy of Music and Theatre in Rostock, occupied since November 1, 2012 by Hans -Peter and Volker Stenzl. The professorship is limited to three years and is funded by private foundation funds.
