Pierre Sané

Pierre Gabriel Michel Sane ( born May 7, 1949 in Dakar ) is a Senegalese international lawyers and political scientists.

Since 1977 he has worked in various projects of development cooperation with a focal point in the region of West and Central Africa. At Carleton University ( Ottawa ), he tried a PhD and holds a M.Sc. in public policy and administration from the London School of Economics. He also has an MBA from the École Supérieure de Commerce et d'Administration des Entreprises (now BEM Bordeaux Management School) as an auditor.

His topics include human rights policy and development. He was a founding member of the Pan-African Foundation ( Panaf ), Frontline (Dublin) and curator of the Henry Dunant Institute, Geneva.

In October 1992 he was appointed by Amnesty International (AI ) Secretary-General, after he joined in 1988. He led several delegations here on relevant United Nations conferences and spoke before the UN Security Council. Before the Organization of American States (Washington), he spoke out repeatedly in favor of a moratorium on death sentences.

Under his leadership were major structural changes take place in the organization of Amnesty International. So he commissioned the preparation of strategy papers, a central fund raisings and crisis management, as well as evaluations

From 2001 to 2010 he worked for UNESCO as Assistant Director-General for Human Sciences.
