Pitcaple

Pitcaple (Gaelic: Baile Chapaill ) is a village in the Scottish unitary authority Aberdeenshire. It lies on the south bank of the River Urie about six kilometers northwest of Inverurie and 23 kilometers southeast of Huntly. The A96 runs through Pitcaple and includes the village on to the road network. The Great North of Scotland Railway, opened in 1854 a railway station in Pitcaple, which was closed in the 1960s.

History

North of the castle Pitcaple Pitcaple Castle was built in 1457. In the following decades the Kings James IV and Charles II and Mary Queen of Scots visited the castle. On the way to his execution in Edinburgh James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose was held some time on Pitcaple Castle caught. After the castle fell into disrepair several decades unused, William Burn pointed it in the 1830s restored. Today, the building is listed as a historic landmark in the highest category A Scottish monument.
