Platydoras

Line catfish ( Platydoras armatulus )

Platydoras ( Gr. " platys " = wide Dora ) is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of catfishes ( Doradidae ). The genus is widespread in northern and central South America. The range extends from the basin of the Orinoco River, Guiana and the Amazon basin, the northeast of Brazil and the Rio Xingu to the Río Paraguay.

Features

Platydoras species, 15 to 24 cm long. Your body is plump and kaulquappenähnlich. The head large, broad and flattened about. The mouth is surrounded by three wide and Bartel pairs. The eye located in the front half of the head or the middle of the head is relatively large. The dorsal fin is high and triangular. My sting ray is serrated on its front edge and rear. So far, four species have been described:

  • Platydoras brachylecis Piorski, Garavello, Arce H. & Sabaj Pérez, 2008
  • Platydoras costatus (Linnaeus, 1758 ) ( type species )
  • Platydoras hancockii ( Valenciennes, 1840)

There are also a fifth, undescribed species from the basin of the Rio Xingu.
