Podolínec

Podolínec ( Pudlein German, Hungarian Podolin, Polish Podoliniec, latin Podolinum ) is a city in the north-eastern Slovakia with 3271 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is the second city in Okres Stara Ľubovňa and lies in the valley of the river Poprad.

History

Podolínec was on the northern border of the former Kingdom of Hungary in the former Spis County (Slovak Spis ), and was first mentioned in writing in 1235. 1292 it got some privileges, like the right of storage and the mileage right. Through these rights, the city was able to control a part of the trade between Hungary and Poland. Podolínec got fortifications, which are still preserved in several places, and was the strategic center of the area with town character. In 1412 it was raised to free royal town.

Attractions

Get in Podolínec the St. Anne's Church from the 13th century, the Renaissance bell tower from the 17th century and the town hall.
