Pokigron

Pokigron on the map of Suriname

Pokigron is a predominantly by Saramaccaner ( Marrons ) inhabited village in Suriname, immediately south of the Brokopondo Reservoir, on the left bank of the Suriname.

Pokigron is inhabited by approximately 500 people. The village is on the road in the bushland of particular importance since it is the last place on Suriname, which can be reached from the capital Paramaribo overland.

From the Saramaccastraat in Paramaribo travel daily for passenger converted DAF trucks ( the so-called " jumbo " ) on Paranam about Brokopondo and Brown Mountain, west along the reservoir to the river port of Pokigron, Atjoni. Here is the transit point for people and goods is by buses and trucks and canoes ( Korjale ) are from and to the headwaters of Suriname on and taken away.

While the inner land or jungle war ( 1986-1992 ) between the two protagonists Ronnie Brunswijk as head of the Jungle commands on one side and Desi Bouterse as coup leader and commander in chief of the military on the other side of the place came in a special way in the headlines. Beginning of 1987 was Pokigron occupied by the jungle command. The military began a counter- attack in September 1987. This should have been killed, according to the military's 40 members of the jungle command. This claim was later reduced to 15 members killed. A team of French doctors that the incident was investigated, came to the conclusion that it was not at all been a militant confrontation between the two groups. They explained rather that innocent citizens were killed.

The attempt by the military in October 1987, accompanied by journalists from the Netherlands on the spot to deliver the rebuttal to the allegations turned out to be doubtful. To this day, the events in Suriname have not been examined in court.
