Pokrovskoye, Rostov Oblast

Pokrovskoe (Russian Покровское ) is a village ( selo ) in the Rostov Oblast in Russia with 12,369 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The town is located some 60 km as the crow west-northwest of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Rostov -on-Don and about 20 km north of the city of Taganrog. It is located on the left bank of the Mius, a good 15 km upstream from its mouth in the Mius Liman Sea of ​​Azov.

Pokrovskoe is the administrative center of the Rajons Neklinowski and seat and only town in the rural community Pokrovskoe selskoje posselenije.

History

The town was founded in 1769 by Zaporozhian Cossacks. The name is derived from the Russian (or Church Slavonic ) Short for Pokrovsky Preswjatoi Bogorodozy, the holiday of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God, one of the " Great Festivals " the Russian Orthodox Church, the first of the village church was dedicated.

Since 1936 Pokrovskoe rayon is the administrative seat of Neklinowski that exists in today's borders since 1965.
