Ponte della Maddalena

The Ponte della Maddalena (Italian for " Magdalene Bridge"), also known as Ponte del Diavolo (Italian for " Devil's Bridge ") is a bridge over the river Serchio near the town of Borgo a Mozzano in the Italian province of Lucca.

History

According to legend, Matilda of Tuscany, countess of Tuscany, led the construction.

A first bridge at this location was built from 1052 to 1115 and significantly expanded in 1300, making its present form was coined. She was part of the Via Francigena, took advantage of the pilgrims on their way to Rome francs to the tomb of the Apostles Peter and Paul.
