Ponthieva

Ponthieva racemosa

Ponthieva is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It consists of more than sixty species of herbaceous plants that are native to tropical and subtropical America.

Description

The species of the genus are terrestrial Ponthieva growing herbaceous plants. The tufts springing roots are fleshy and hairy. The leaves are in a basal rosette, they are significantly or hardly stalked. Their shape is lanceolate to oval.

The loosely racemose inflorescence is terminal. He is usually long, erect, hairy, he wears little to numerous flowers. The peduncle is hairy and glandular carries some bracts. The bracts are shorter than the flowers. The ovary is stalked glandular and hairy. The flowers are rather small, 'upside, the petals are of thinner texture. The three sepals are usually free, the side can be fused together at their base for a piece. The petals are shaped asymmetrically, fused at the base narrow ( nailed ) and with the column, the front part and often striking in his acting effect replacing the lip. The lip is in contrast to the other petals fleshy, concave, fused at the base with the column, entire or three-lobed. The column is short, cylindrical and fleshy. The scar is transverse to the column axis oval, bulged at the lateral edges. The stamen is bent down towards the column axis, it contains four yellow, mealy pollinia sitting on stalks at a small Klebdrüse ( Viscidium ). The rostellum between stigma and stamen is like fingers stretched forward and pliable. Are formed oval capsules.

As bees visit flowers were observed from the family Halictidae. The lip produces an oily substance, which points to pollinators from the Bee Family Anthophoridae.

Occurrence

Ponthieva comes from the subtropical southern United States via Central America and the Caribbean to the northern half of South America before. The southernmost occurrences are found in Argentina and Paraguay. There are populated up to 3000 meters altitude. The sites are located at the most humid places in the shade of forests.

Systematics and botanical history

The genus Ponthieva was erected in 1813 by Robert Brown in Aitons " Hortus Kewensis ". The name honors Henri de Ponthiev. Type species is Ponthieva glandulosa, a synonym to Ponthieva racemosa.

Ponthieva is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Cranichidinae. Are closely related to the genera Baskervilla and Cranichis.
