Port Alfred

Port Alfred is a town in the municipality Ndlambe, Cacadu District, Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. It is located halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London ( every 150 kilometers ) at the mouth of the Kowie River. The river divides the city into two halves. The city is also the seat of local government. In 2001, she had 6287 inhabitants.

History

The city was founded about 1820 by British settlers, which were settled by Lord Charles Henry Somerset as a buffer between the Western Cape and the Xhosa. She was originally named Port Kowie, after the river on which it lies. Then the name was changed to Port Frances, after the daughter of Lord Somerset. In 1860 it was renamed the Port Alfred to Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, who visited South Africa at that time.

Attractions

Due to the wide, sandy beaches and the numerous artificial islands at the mouth of the Kowie River - there is the large marina - the city is today a resort for water sports.

The artificial islands in the estuary called Marina. You are a gated community in private hands and not open to the public. However, the channels between them are accessible by boats or canoes.

The Methodist Settlers ' Church in 1827, is a national monument.
