Port Royal

Port Royal was a major port city in Jamaica, until it was completely destroyed on 7 June 1692 by an earthquake and a subsequent tsunami and sank for the most part in the sea and thus created quicksand. The town was situated on a promontory on sandy ground, who came to the slides in the quake. Around 3,000 people are doing have been killed, half of the population at that time.

It reconstruction attempts have been made ​​, but a fire in 1710 and several hurricanes in the following years prevented a revival. On 14 January 1907, the town was once again destroyed by an earthquake partially, but again slipped the headland and many homes were destroyed. The city is now a fishing village with about 2000 inhabitants, and plays no special role.

During its heyday, Port Royal was one of the richest cities in the world, which was favored by their position for English pirate who could intercept from here the fully laden Spanish Galleons on the way back from Panama to Spain. The best known of these buccaneers was Henry Morgan, whose grave was located in the local cemetery. The city was known for its immorality and loose morals at the same time. There are efforts to explain the sunk in the sea remains of Port Royal a World Heritage Site. The Jamaican UNESCO delegation has the object placed on the Tentative List in 2009.
