Powszechny Zakład Ubezpieczeń

The Grupa Powszechny Zakład Ubezpieczeń ( PZU ) is the largest insurance company in Poland.

The company is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange share index WIG 20. It belongs to 46% of the Polish state and 13% of the Dutch Eureko BV insurance. The other shares are in free float.

The company's headquarters PZU Tower in Warsaw. Its roots go back to the year 1803, when the first insurance company was established on Polish soil. 1952 she was awarded the monopoly in the People's Republic of Poland.

The PZU dominates half of the market for property insurance and 25 % of the market for life insurance in Poland.

Privatization

Since 1998, the privatization of the company was. On 5 November 1999 30% of PZU shares were sold to private investors by the Polish Ministry of Finance. Of these, 20 % went to the Dutch investor Eureko BV, based in Amsterdam and 10% in the BIG Bank Gdański SA in Gdansk. In 2000, a further 15 % of PZU shares were issued free of charge to employees. Were eligible to receive 19,395 people. On October 4, agreed in 2001 PZU Board and Ministry of Finance that another 21 % of the shares are sold to Eureko once PZU has been brought to the market, which should not be done later than the end of 2002. As a further condition was demanded that the Polish Ministry of the Interior approved the sale of additional shares. Although Eureko fulfilled these conditions, the Finance Ministry broke down under frequent ministerial changes to the contract, to which Eureko filed a lawsuit against the Ministry. Governments of different political orientation were for many years unable to agree with Eureko BV.

Since the 12th May 2010 the company is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
