Preitenegg is a municipality with 968 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Wolfsberg in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the upper Lavant Valley on the slopes of Packalpe and Koralpe in predominantly mountainous terrain. The pack-saddle ( 1169 m), the Hebalm and the sea level also mark the border to Styria.

History

The first documentary mention in 1288 concerned the Church of St. Nicholas. The patron had the bishopric of Lavant. The Bailiwick has been exercised by the rule of Waldstein. Our own parish received Preitenegg until the 15th century.

The community has always been marked by traffic, since it is located at an important crossing of the Alps, the pack-saddle. This connection between Klagenfurt and Graz and Italy and Vienna / East Central Europe was to the 18th century only a mule track, then a simple driveway and was eventually expanded 1930-1936 to Packerbundesstraße. Since the completion of the north running south motorway (A 2) in the 1980s, the place Preitenegg is relieved from traffic.

Population

According to 2001 census Preitenegg has 1,129 inhabitants, of which 99.1 % are Austrian citizens. 96.9 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 1.6% for the Protestant Church. 1.3% of the population has no religious persuasion.

Coat of arms

The emblem of the green shield Preitenegg reason reflects the agricultural and forestry character of the community, who finished with three black threads golden links pole symbolized in stylized form the highway, crosier and the three balls refer to the parish patron St. Nicholas.

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is: " In a golden green, extended, black with three threads - the two outer impaired - occupied Links pile, accompanied in front of three golden balls placed diagonally to the right and a golden crosier growing. "

Coat of arms and flag were presented to the community on March 2, 2004. The flag is gold - green with integrated crest.

Personalities

  • In the district Oberpreitenegg is the Berghof the Schell family; Maria Schell ( April 26, 2005 passed away here ) and her younger brother Maximilian Schell here have spent part of their childhood before they were superstars in film and theater. Both are buried in the local cemetery.
  • Anton Kreuzer ( born June 14, 1932 in Unterpreitenegg ) is an Austrian journalist.
  • Maximilian Schell (1930-2014), actor, Oscar winner, director and producer, an honorary citizen in 2005.
