Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg

Albert Heinrich Joseph Carl Viktor Georg Friedrich of Saxe- Altenburg ( born April 14, 1843 in Munich, † May 22 1902 in Serrahn ) was a prince of Saxe- Altenburg and General.

Life

Albert was the only surviving son of the Prince Edward of Saxe- Altenburg (1804-1852) and came from his second marriage with Louise (1822-1875), daughter of Prince Heinrich XIX. Reuss to Greiz.

Prince Albert was 1861-1865 lieutenant in the 5th Prussian Uhlans, after which he entered the service of the Russian Tsar and was here General à la suite. Albert had good relations with the court in St. Petersburg and was a close friend of Tsar Alexander III. In 1890 he accompanied Emperor Wilhelm II and Chancellor Leo von Caprivi for a trip to Russia.

At his request, Albert was buried in a beech forest south of Wilsen.

Marriages and descendants

Albert married his first marriage on May 6, 1885 in Berlin Princess Marie ( 1855-1888 ), daughter of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia, with whom he had two daughters:

  • Olga Elisabeth (1886-1955)
  • Marie (1888-1947)

After the death of his first wife he married on 13 December 1891 in Remplin Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg ( 1857-1936 ), daughter of Duke George of Mecklenburg and the Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna Romanova. The second marriage remained childless.
