Prince Eduard of Saxe-Altenburg

Eduard Karl Wilhelm Christian von Sachsen -Altenburg ( born July 3, 1804 in Hildburghausen, † May 16, 1852 in Munich) was a prince of Saxe- Hildburghausen ( 1826 Prince of Saxe- Altenburg ), royal Bavarian Lieutenant General and commander of the 1st cavalry Division in Munich.

Life

Edward was the youngest son of Duke Friedrich of Saxe- Hildburghausen (1763-1834) ( since 1826 Duke of Saxe- Altenburg ) from his marriage to Charlotte ( 1769-1818 ), daughter of Charles II, Duke Ludwig of Mecklenburg -Strelitz. His godfather was, among others, Edward Duke of Kent, father of Queen Victoria.

Edward joined the Bavarian military service as a captain in the 6th Chevaulegerregiment " Duke of Leuchtenberg ." Eventually, he became owner of the first Chevaulegerregiments. At the top of a Bavarian military contingent, he accompanied his nephew Otto, the son of his sister Theresa, Queen of Bavaria, to Greece and became governor of Nauplia here.

After his return to Bavaria in 1834 he continued to serve in the Bavarian army and in 1848 was appointed lieutenant-general in 1844 after he was awarded the Bavarian Order of St. Hubert. In Schleswig -Holstein war he fought as a leader of the Bavarian army with other Thuringian princes on the part of the German Confederation and distinguished himself in the conquest of Diippel. Thereafter, he was appointed commander of the First Cavalry Division in Munich.

He was a close friend of his brother Ludwig I of Bavaria, with whom he has performed an extensive written correspondence. Since 1843 Edward was Chairman of the Munich Association against animal cruelty.

From his sister Therese, who he was very close throughout his life, especially in the Lola Montez affair, he was financially supported, which he was able to purchase a house in Munich. Together with Therese, he had his hunting lodge Seidingstadt inherited, for which he had to pay off his sister.

Edward died in Munich and was buried in the royal crypt Altenburger.

In his first marriage married Eduard on July 25, 1835 in Sigmaringen Amalie ( 1815-1841 ), daughter of Prince Karl of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen, with whom he had the following children:

  • Ludwig (1839-1844)
  • Johann (1841-1844)

Edward's second wife, Louise (1822-1875), daughter of Prince Heinrich XIX. Reuss to Greiz he had married on March 8, 1842 in Greiz, sprang two children:
