Princess Johanna Charlotte of Anhalt-Dessau

Johanna Charlotte of Anhalt- Dessau ( * April 6, 1682 in Dessau, † March 31, 1750 in Herford ) was a princess of Anhalt- Dessau from the house of Ascanians and by marriage Margravine of Brandenburg- Schwedt. From 1729 until her death she was Princess-Abbess of Herford.

Life

Johanna Charlotte was the youngest daughter of Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt- Dessau (1627-1693) from his marriage to Catherine Henriette (1637-1708), daughter of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange. The princess has been carefully and extensively trained.

They married on January 25, 1699 in Oranienbaum Margrave Philipp Wilhelm von Brandenburg- Schwedt ( 1669-1711 ). Nevertheless, the couple had their own palaces in Berlin, they lived mostly in Schwedt. After the death of her husband Johanna Charlotte returned to Berlin and took care of the education of their children.

In 1729 they got himself elected abbess of standing under Prussian auspices pin Herford. On October 10, the new abbess was admitted solemnly, but initially lived in beech wood. It was not until 1735 she took permanent residence in Herford. During her tenure she founded in 1729 the Order of free secular congregation, and took on 17 canonesses. To her Koadjutorin she appointed Hedwig Sophie of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp, who became her successor.

Johanna Charlotte died without disease in the night of 30 March 31, 1750 on " apoplexy ". She was buried in the vault just renewed the Collegiate Chapel of Herford.
