Philip William, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt

Philipp Wilhelm von Brandenburg- Schwedt ( * May 19, 1669 in the castle of Königsberg, † December 19, 1711 in Schwedt Castle ) was a Prussian prince, the first Margrave of Brandenburg- Schwedt and governor of Magdeburg from 1692 to 1711.

Life

Philip William was the eldest son of the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm from his second marriage with the Princess Dorothea. Their aim was to ensure the financial security of their sons. Shortly after the birth of Wilhelm Philipp his mother acquired the dominion Schwedt, later the rule Wildenbruchstrasse was added. Both of them had converted immediately. After his mother's death, Prince Philip William inherited their rule Schwedt - game break. In the recess of 3 March 1692, he reached an agreement with his half-brother Prince Elector Friedrich III. about his other supply, since he renounced for him by the Great Elector testamentary provided " partitioned rule " without sovereignty in Halberstadt. After his older brother Frederick the coronation he turned into " Prince in Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg" with the title " Royal Highness ". The nomenclature " Brandenburg- Schwedt " came on in the 19th century posthumously and to differentiate from the main line. Philipp Wilhelm is the progenitor of the branch line of the royal house of Hohenzollern. On January 25, 1699 Margrave Philipp Wilhelm married Princess Johanna Charlotte of Anhalt- Dessau ( 1682-1750 ), a daughter of Johann Georg II and Henriette Catherine. As a widow she became Abbess of the Free worldly kingdom pin Herford.

Philipp Wilhelm took over as commander in part, among others, in the campaigns against France and was put to the General Feldzeugmeister 1697 at the head of the artillery. His half-brother Elector Frederick III. ( the later Prussian King Frederick I ), gave him beyond several regiments. During his time as governor of Magdeburg, he was charged by the University of Halle (Saale ) for " Rector magnificentissimus ".

As a Berlin city apartment to the Margrave was the Weilersche Palais, the later palace of Kaiser Wilhelm I.. Buried he was in the Berlin Cathedral, where the majority of dignitaries is buried out of the house of Hohenzollern.

Since Philip 's eldest son William was still a minor at his death, the King of Prussia ( Frederick I and Frederick William I ) took over the guardianship. With the death of his granddaughter Anna Elisabeth Luise the sideline Brandenburg- Schwedt died 1820.
