Countess Henriette Catherine of Nassau

Henriette Catharina of Orange- Nassau ( born January 31, 1637 The Hague, † November 4, 1708 in Oranienbaum Palace ) was a Dutch princess of the House of Orange, and by marriage Princess of Anhalt- Dessau.

Life

She was born as the third daughter of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange and his wife Countess Amalie of Solms- Braunfels. In 1642 she was betrothed as a child than with the also still underage Count Enno Ludwig von Ostfriesland. Later, however, Henriette Catharina successfully refused the marriage with the Count of East Frisia, the engagement was broken off. Through the mediation of her brother Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg, but then came on July 9, 1659 concluded the marriage to Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt- Dessau in the Dutch city of Groningen. This wedding was the basis for a long -ending good family relationship between the Principality of Anhalt- Dessau and the Electorate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia.

As Princess Henriette Catharina participated in the establishment and the development of the relatively poor principality. In 1660 she received the village Nischwitz as personal property, which was renamed in 1673 in memory of their origin in Oranienbaum. As of 1683 the city had here, park and Oranienbaum palace built as their personal residence. After the death of her husband, Johann Georg II in 1693 they had the castle Oranienbaum expand the widow's seat, she lived until her death.
