Private Dancer is a song by Tina Turner from 1984, which was written by Mark Knopfler and produced by John Carter. It was released in the same album.

History

Originally Mark Knopfler wrote the song for his band Dire Straits. It should therefore also on the album Love over Gold be included, but later Knopfler was of the view that a woman is better suited to sing the song. It was published on 28 October 1984 on the record label Capitol Records.

In a live performance in BBC's Top of the Pops Turner was not allowed the line " American Express will do nicely, thank you" sing because there was a ban on uses of the product name in the show. She sang instead the rewritten line: " A few pounds sterling will do nicely, thank you" ( German: A couple of pounds sterling are also accepted, sincere thanks. )

The song is about a stripper or prostitute, who describes himself as Private Dancer. It describes how empty she feels it.
