History

In the year 798/802 AD, the present town Prümzurlay was first mentioned in a deed of gift of the Abbey of Echternach as " Prumia ". Settlements at the same location probably existed for much longer. Evidence can be found in the remains of a Roman villa in the district Mausebach, as well as in the prehistoric and later alleged by the Celts ( Treverians ) used hill forts in the district Prümerburg.

The history of the place Prümzurlay is very closely linked to the Prümerburg. Prümzurlay is characterized by a very narrow valley. Located on a 40 m high sandstone cliffs Prümerburg dominates the entire valley and offers an optimal overview. It is believed that the first inhabitants were dependent of the lords of the castle, but this is not historically proven.

Very little is known about the period of the early Middle Ages. It was only in 1658 find themselves records of " Prum for laity ". Shown are the effects of the Dutch -Prussian War (sic): there is only one living male person in the place.

Around the year 1810 will take place in Münster forest by a large landslide a complete burial place. The Prüm jams. As the local chronicle reported at that time there was great fear in the population that could lead to the formation of a lake and to the downfall Prümzurlays. It is likely that the Prüm Falls (now often called " Irreler Waterfalls" ), which are found in this area, then assumed its present form.

District Prümerburg

Near the castle ruins " Prümerburg " originated from the year 1960, the cottage settlement " holiday village Prümerburg ". On a total area of around 180,000 square meters 148 cottages were built. These were the first settlement of its kind in the Federal Republic.

Origin of the place name

The name " Prümzurlay " was from the place marked by the flowing river " Prüm ", as well as the Moselle Franconian word " laity ". The term " laity " or in the singular " Lay", refers to the impressive sandstone shapes in the environment Prümzurlays. Best known here is the Devil's Canyon (Eifel ), about 3 km from Prümzurlay. The name of the place was subjected to many changes throughout history. Prümzurlay always belonged to a border region, often changed the rule ( Luxembourgish, French) until finally in 1815 finally became part of Prussia. This is reflected in the place names. If Prümzurlay originally mentioned as " Prumia " says this change among other things, " Proeme for Leyen " and the French " sur Prume Leyen " until the name assumed its present form. On the other hand, there is also a possible and simple linguistic justification for the place name. The old German word lei / ley / lay means rock, which corresponds to the rock richness of the place and its surroundings. Through the town flows the river Prüm. Put it all together: The river Prüm in the rocks, Prüm to Layen, Prümzurlay.
