Pukanec

Pukanec ( Pukanz German, Hungarian Bakabánya ) is a municipality in western Slovakia. It lies at the foot of the mountains Selmec, located in the Valley of the Sikenica, about 18 km from Levice and 25 km from Banská Štiavnica.

History

The village was mentioned in 1075 for the first time in writing villa Baka. The place was in 1323 granted town rights in 1345 and was raised to free royal town. The mining industry in the city focused on gold and silver. The city was among the founders of the outdoor mountain towns ( with Banská Bystrica, Kremnica, Banska Bela, Banská Štiavnica, Ľubietová and Nová Bana ). In the 18th and 19th century saw the decline of mining, in 1876 the city of a free royal city was downgraded to simple village.

The municipality also includes the hamlet of Majere.
