Donnerskirchen in Burgenland ( Austria ) is a town with 2718 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. Purbach is also known by the legend The Purbacher Turk.

Geography

The city is located in northern Burgenland, near the state capital of Eisenstadt. To the municipality include any additional locations.

History

In the local area there are remains from the Early and Late Bronze Age. A Hallstatt settlement ( north of the village ) attested by finds in the castle stables. Furthermore, there are Roman period settlement finds. Under the Romans, today Purbach lay in the province of Pannonia.

1527 Purbach was raised to market. 1529 and 1532, the market was burnt down by the Turks.

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Feketeváros. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). Municipality is Donnerskirchen since 1997 ( by 22 VO, market town 24/1976 ).
