History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill.

Later, under the Romans today Hornstein then lay in the province of Pannonia.

The place was first mentioned in 1271 as terra Zorm documented. 1365 family bought Kanizsay of the family Wolfurt the castle in Hornstein, she extensions including through the acquisition of goods Nicholas II of Pöttelsdorf, the Lords of Roy and the Gutkeled family to a rule. The Kanizsay called themselves then also Count of chert.

Hornstein was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( Sopron County ). The German name of locality is the mirror translation of the Hungarian version mittelaltrischen Szarvkő ( Zorwku, 1347; Zarwku, 1364; Harren Stone, 1415; Theyn Horn, 1485 ).

The market rights were granted to the City before 1555 and renewed in 1651 and 1845. In the war against the Turks in 1529 the town was destroyed and 1532 there was a Neubestiftung with Croats.

After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).
