Putumayo Department

The Departamento de Putumayo is a department in the southwest border of Colombia. It is bordered on the south by the states of Perú and Ecuador and on the other sides of the four Colombian departments of Nariño in the West, Cauca ( only ~ 50 km) and Caquetá in the north and the Amazon in the east.

The soils of the province are ideal for agriculture. There are mainly cultivated corn, bananas, rice, sugar cane and yams. The region is rich in mineral resources, as crude oil is produced and there are gold and silver mines.

In Putumayo, the National Park La Paya is located. The border with Ecuador and Peru forms the Río Putumayo.

Administrative subdivision

The Departamento de Putumayo consists of 13 municipios. The population figures are based on the census of DANE 2005.
