Quatermass (Band)

Quatermass was an English rock group, formed in 1969, disbanded in 1971.

Band History

Their only hit was Black Sheep Of The Family. The band consisted of drummer Mick Underwood, keyboardist Peter Robinson, the singer and bassist John Gustafson. Quatermass combined powerful lead vocals, comparable with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, with symphonic progressive rock in the vein of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. On their only LP Quatermass especially pieces like Laughin ' Tackle must be highlighted. The trio here combines gloomy late romantic Streicherorchestrierungen with swinging, organ stressed jazz-rock themes. The three musicians got involved heavily in the area between jazz and rock. They cooperated with the Scandinavian guitarist Janne Schaffner and with percussionist and keyboardist Morris Pert, who belonged to the core of Phil Collins second group Brand X later. Bassist and vocalist John Gustafson later became a sought-after studio musician ( Chi Coltrane, Kevin Ayers, Ian Gillan Band, Roxy Music) and 1997 solo album published: Goose Grease.

Keyboardist Peter Robinson later became active in the field of Phil Collins and his Brand X project. As Gustafson and drummer Mick Underwood belonged temporarily to the environment of the Ian Gillan Band.
