Rajko Kuzmanović

Rajko Kuzmanovic ( born December 1, 1931 in Čelinac in Banja Luka ) is a Bosnian politician. Between December 2007 and November 2010 he was President of Republika Srpska within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After training as a teacher Kuzmanovic studied law in Zagreb. At the same time he also studied sociology and education. His law studies in Zagreb, he finished in 1977 and received his PhD then at the Law Faculty in Mostar.

Since the establishment of the Law Institute of the University of Banja Luka in 1975 Kuzmanovic taught here, among others Public Law and Comparative Politics. From 1983 to 1985 he was Dean of the Law Faculty and 1996-2000 Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration. At times, he was also Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor of the University.

From 1994 Kuzmanovic was in addition to his teaching at the University also judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republika Srpska. In 1998 he was appointed its president.

2007 Kuzmanovic stepped up to the presidential elections of Republika Srpska for the Confederation of Independent Social Democrats. The election was scheduled after President Milan Jelic died suddenly after a heart attack. When the polls on December 9, Kuzmanovic could combine nearly 42 % of the votes and thus won the election. His strongest competitor, Ognjen Tadić of the Serbian Democratic Party came to 35% of the vote. The swearing-in ceremony took place on December 28, 2007.

Kuzmanovic resigned as president of the Republika Srpska to a further strengthening of the central government in Sarajevo and demanding the return of some powers to the constituent states. His election strengthened the power of the Union of Independent Social Democrats, who now both the office of head of state, as well as with Dodik that turned the head of government.

At the 2010 elections Kuzmanovic renounced his candidacy. He was succeeded by Milorad Dodik, the new Prime Minister Aleksandar Dzombic.

Kuzmanovic is married. Besides Serbian, he is fluent in Russian.
