Rajkumari Amrit Kaur

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur ( born February 2, 1889 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, † October 2, 1964 ) was an Indian politician.

Biography

The daughter of Harnam Singh, the second son of Maharaja of Kapurthala, attended private schools in England and learned early on in the residence of her father in Shimla leaders of the Indian independence movement such as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Motilal Nehru know who converted the Council of Christianity Harnam Singh studied.

Later, she became one of the secretaries of Gandhi and finally its consultant, particularly on issues of women's suffrage and equality. Your ideas on these topics, she published in books such as appeal to the women and for women and became the co-founders of the All- Indian Women's Committee of the Indian National Congress ( INC).

After the sovereignty of India by the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, she finally began her political career and was appointed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947 in the first twelve-man Government of India, in which she was health minister until 1957. As such, it was 1950 President of the Assembly of the World Health Organization ( WHO), the World Health Assembly. Between 1951 and 1957 she was also Minister of Communications in the Cabinet of Nehru.

After leaving the government, she was in 1957 a member of the upper house ( Rajya Sabha ) and this was up to her death.
