Ralph A. Gamble

Ralph Abernethy Gamble ( born May 6, 1885 in Yankton, South Dakota; † March 4, 1959 in St. Michaels, Maryland) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1937 and 1957 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Robert J. Gamble was his father and Congressman John Rankin Gamble his uncle.

Career

Ralph Abernethy Gamble attended public schools in Yankton and Washington DC In 1905 he graduated from the Tome Prep School in Port Deposit ( Maryland), 1909, Princeton University, 1911 at the George Washington University Law School in Washington DC and 1912 at Columbia Law School in New York City. After receiving his license to practice law in 1913, he began practicing in New York City. Between 1918 and 1933 he was Counsel for the Town of Mamaroneck and 1926-1928 for Larchmont. He sat 1931-1937 in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

He was elected in a by-election in the 25th Election District of New York in the 75th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Charles D. Millard. His seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, he took on 2 November 1937. In the congressional elections of 1938 for the 76th Congress, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1944 he stood as a candidate in the 28th electoral district of New York for the 79th Congress. After a successful election, he entered on January 4, 1945, the successor of William T. Byrne. He was re-elected three times in a row. In the congressional elections of 1952 for the 83rd Congress, he was elected in the 26th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Christopher C. McGrath on January 4, 1953. He was re-elected once. Since he gave up for reelection in 1956, he was parted from 3 January 1957 on from the Congress. During his time Congress he chaired the Joint Committee on Housing ( 80th Congress ).

He retired and lived in St. Michaels, where he died on March 4, 1959. His body was buried in the Hopewell Cemetery, Port Deposit.
