Ralph Godfrey Kercheval ( born December 1, 1911 in Salt Lick, Kentucky, USA, † October 6, 2010 in Lexington, Kentucky ) was an American football player. He played in the National Football League ( NFL) with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Playing career

Ralph Kercheval studied at the University of Kentucky for the American football team he played. In 1931 to 1933 he was honored by his college for his sporting achievements. Kercheval earned his degree in animal husbandry and worked after his studies in a horse racing stable.

In 1934, Ralph Kercheval has signed a professional contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the only player of the team was in receipt of fixed annual salary. His annual salary amounted at times to 3,600 U.S. dollars. Kercheval in 1940 ended his playing career without ever having won a title.

After the career

After his playing career Kercheval served from 1941 to 1945 as a cavalry officer in the U.S. Army. After his service, he worked as a horse breeder and trainer. In the years 1971 and 1972 he was president of the American Thoroughbred horse breeding association. Ralph Kercheval is buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington.

Honors

Ralph Kercheval was a member of the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame, in the Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame and was elected twice to the All- Star.
