Raron

Raron from from Castle Hill

Raron (French Rarogne; Valais German: Raro ) is a municipality and the capital of the district of West - Raron the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

In Raron one finds a striking castle hill with late medieval church, which was built around the year 1500 by Ulrich Ruffiner. Right next to the church is the tomb of the writer and poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Was blown into the castle hill in the cave of the rock church of St. Michael.

The oldest letter box of Switzerland can be found on the door of Maxenhauses. It originates from the Napoleonic period, as the Wallis belonged to the French empire.

Traffic

In Raron are the southern tunnel portal of the Lötschberg base tunnel. On the airfield Raron, who was also a military airfield until 1995, is a base of the mountain rescue helicopter squadron Air Zermatt.
