Raul Proença

Raul Sangreman Proença ( born May 10, 1884 in Caldas da Rainha, † May 20 1941 in Porto ) was a Portuguese librarians, writers, journalists and intellectuals.

Proença studied Economics and Finance at the Instituto Industrial e Comercial in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. He defined himself as an idealist and a realist, argumentative, he advocated a democratic socialism within the framework of a parliamentary system. Proença established itself as a key intellectual minds of the Portuguese policy in the first quarter of the 20th century. He distinguished himself particularly by his continuous criticism of the system of the First Portuguese Republic, which was marked by constant corruption.

Proença became involved in various intellectual movements, including the Renascença Portuguesa, founded the magazine Serea Nova (1921) and was part of the "Group of the National Library " ( grupo da Biblioteca Nacional, 1919-1926 ). In this context, Raul Proença worked since 1911 for many years in the Portuguese National Library, in which rose to the Technical Director and intense with Jaime Cortesão, director of the library, worked.

Since he Sidónio Pais ' distinguished himself as well as the military dictatorship both as a critic, he was Proença 1927 exiled to Paris. 1932 returned and had been suffering at the time from a serious brain disease, so he was transferred to the hospital Hospital Conde de Ferreira Porto. There Raul Proença died in 1941 of typhoid fever.
