Ravenshoe, Queensland

Ravenshoe (pronounced reɪvənz.hoʊ or RAYvənz - hoh ) is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland. It is located in the Atherton Tablelands, 123 kilometers south-west of Cairns on the Kennedy Highway. At the 2006 census, 910 inhabitants were counted.

The city is situated at 930 m, making it the highest town in Queensland. It also has Queensland's highest altitude pub, The Top Pub, and the highest station in the state. Diagonally opposite the top pub is Win's Gallery, where wood carvings from the region and the paintings of Winsone Board are issued. There is also the Millstream Falls, the widest waterfalls in Australia.

The main industry was the timber, but in 1987 the government declared 9000 km ² of the surrounding rainforest World Heritage Wet Tropics of Queensland. Since then, the city lives mainly from tourism as well as the meat and milk processing.

History

Ravenshoe was founded in 1881 by John Moffat as a settlement for the timber industry after William Mazlin had discovered there a large number of cedars.
