History

Construction of the Hamburg- Venlo railway in 1870, the Cologne -Minden Railway Company also wanted to make the neighborhoods south and Hochlarmark accessible by rail. Even the workers of the mine Recklinghausen should be able to reach their jobs faster. It was decided to build a station building with a house and side platform. When closed the pedestrian barriers could use a crossing bridge on the north side sidewalk.

In the 1970s, the station was modernized. The connection tracks were mined for now disused coal mine, the station building and the crossing bridge torn down and built the new platforms. Thus, out of the house platform, a side platform and from the second side platform a central platform. This additional track was built to allow direct deliveries to Herne station. But it was only a short time and was later used for freight. In addition, a modern interlocking east of the platforms was built. As part of the extension of the S -Bahn line S 2 to the central station of the railway station was modernized between 1997 and 1998 for the second time. The two platforms have been equipped with ramps and increases the platform to track 3 on S-Bahn level. This has the consequence that the central platform has two different heights, as the platforms of the tracks 1 and 2 were in the old height. Upon completion of the modernization of Recklinghausen Süd station to Category transit system maintenance has been downgraded because there solely S- and regional trains. On May 24, 1998 held there for the first time a commuter train that connects since then from Monday to Friday from 6 to 20 clock Recklinghausen with Dortmund.
