Regina Benjamin

Regina Marcia Benjamin ( born October 26, 1956 in Mobile, Alabama) is an American physician. She was appointed by President Barack Obama to the head of the Public Health Service ( "Surgeon General of the United States " ) in the USA on 13 July 2009.

Life

Regina Benjamin studied medicine at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she was a Ph.D. and completed her residency training at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Besides her work as a doctor in Bayou La Batre independent, she completed an MBA from Tulane University and founded a clinic in Bayou La Batre, which offers largely free treatments for residents below the poverty line.

She was extraordinary Dean for Rural Medicine at the University of South Alabama. In 1995 she became the first member under age 40 and first African- American woman in the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association (AMA ), the largest professional organization of physicians in the U.S., selected. In addition to many honorary posts she is committed to the health of the U.S., the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

President Barack Obama has appointed Regina Benjamin on 13 July 2009 as Head of the Public Health Service ( " 18th Surgeon General of the United States ") of the United States. She leads the United States Public Health Service, an agency in the Ministry of Health of the United States. The "Surgeon General " is a person who takes a position on all matters of public health services to the Government of the United States. The confirmation of their appointment by the U.S. Senate took place on 29 October 2009. Their main task will be to reform the U.S. health care system.
