Remo Rossi

Remo Rossi ( born September 27, 1909 in Locarno, † December 30, 1982 in Bern ) was a Swiss sculptor.

Life and work

Remo Rossi came from a family of sculptors in Ticino Arzo. He attended high school in Locarno and then in 1926 the School of Applied Arts in Lucerne. From 1927 to 1931 he studied anatomy, design and architecture at the Milan Academy of Fine Arts Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. 1932 and 1933 he studied in Paris at the École des Beaux -Arts and at the Académie Scandinave with the sculptor Charles Despiau; This recognized his talent and arranged for him to leave the academy and continue working alone in his studio, where he visited him regularly and advised. One of his first bronze sculptures ( Adolescente, created in 1934 ) was exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and reproduced in the art magazine Arts. In 1935 he was invited to exhibitions in Brussels and Amsterdam. In 1936 he returned to Locarno and traveled extensively through Europe. In 1943 he married Bianca Bernasconi. In 1945 he became a member of the Federal Commission of Historic Monuments. Since 1962 he was a permanent commissioner and officer as Switzerland's representative at the Venice Biennale.

Remo Rossi's artistic work can be seen in the classical period ( until 1962 ), in the geometric period ( until 1975) and divided into the period of refinement. It includes, among other sculptures, sculptures, reliefs, architectural art and drawings. A significant area occupies a sacred art. So he created in 1951 for example, the parish church of Courfaivre, for Fernand Léger, the glass windows and Jean Lurçat created the tapestry, the tabernacle and 1974 a group of bronze sculptures for the Holy Cross Church in Langnau in the Emmental. Remo has won numerous awards, including 1973 and 1977 the first prize at the " International Exhibition of Sculpture " in Madrid, as well as competitions, so in 1943 for the monument of Giuseppe Motta. Together with Battista Ratti won Remo in 1954 the competition for the 25 - and 50 -franc piece. Remo was, inter alia, friends with the Italian sculptor Lucio Fontana, as well as with Hans Arp, with whom he worked for a time in Locarno.

2009's " Foundation Remo Rossi " ( Fondazione Remo Rossi) was founded in Locarno. It provides young talent scholarships and work stays in the former studio spaces and promotes studies on work and person Remo Rossi.
