Remy de Gourmont

Rémy de Gourmont ( born April 4, 1858 in Bazoches -au- Houlme at Argentan, † September 27, 1915 in Paris) was a French writer, co-founder and long time of the Mercure de France employees and a major theoretician of symbolism; he became acquainted with literary and philosophical essays and wrote novels, short stories, poetry and plays next. He had an important influence on Blaise Cendrars.

Biography

Rémy de Gourmont was the son of Auguste -Marie de Gourmont, Comte de Gourmont, and his wife Mathilde de Montfort. 1866 the family moved to Villedieu- les- Poêles. Later, he studied law in Caen in 1879 and Bachelor 's degree in law. After graduating Gourmont moved to Paris. From 1881 he was employed at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, incidentally, he also wrote articles in the French newspapers Le Monde and Le Contemporain. His interest lay in ancient literature, in the footsteps of Gustave Kahn. In this time he met Berthe Courrière, model and legacy of sculptor Auguste Clésinger know and love. Rémy de Gourmont began a literary alliance with Joris -Karl Huysmans, and 1889 he was a founder of the Mercure de France. In 1891 he published a political pamphlet, called Le Joujou patriotisme. By arguing that France and Germany jointly have an aesthetic culture, called for a rapprochement between the two countries - as opposed to the nationalists in the French government. The consequences of this political essay led to his dismissal at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The later years were marked by illness and depression. 1915 died Rémy de Gourmont from a stroke and was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery. As sole heir was his long-time companion Berthe Courrière who also died a few months later.
