René Ferrier

René Ferrier ( born December 7, 1936 in Thionne, Allier, † 15 September 1998) is a former French footballer.

Club career

The lanky external rotor came 1954 Erstdivisionär AS Saint -Étienne ( ASSE ) and has been used by coach Jean Snella than just 18- year-old in the first team. He looked elegant and availed with accurate templates in the game design and good defensive work of his team from the beginning. Two years later, the Greens once again reached the Cup final, and after the 1-0 win over FC Nancy was allowed this time René Ferrier keep the coveted trophy in hands. A few weeks later came the cold shower: Cup Winners' Cup was relegated to Division 2. Ferrier remained faithful to Saint-Étienne and returned twelve months later ( 1963) as second division champions in the footballing upper house back to where the climber surprisingly stormed equal to the table top and decided the championship of the season 1963/64, for themselves. In addition to the side runners were with Robert Herbin, Aimé Jacquet and striker André Guy a number of new players in the ranks of the ASSE, in which also Rachid Mekhloufi after a four -year stint in the Algerian " Independence Self" always better able to set the scene. In addition, early in the season and coach Snella had returned to the Loire.

Ferrier was in all the eight European Cup matches on the field, which denied the ASSE at this time, and had already participated in the Coupe Latine in the summer of 1957. The very first home appearance of the club in a UEFA competition ( September 1957 ), he scored in the second leg of the Champion Clubs' Cup against Rangers in the 87th minute the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory, which still was not enough for getting ahead. Also 1964/65 was already in the first round of the end for the Verts ( 2:2 and 1:2 against the Swiss FC La Chaux -de-Fonds ). In between there were Pokalsiegercup 1962/63 at least a small sense of achievement when you initially prevailed against Vitória Setúbal. In the second round, however, the 1st FC Nuremberg stopped with 0:0 and 0:3 while all other hopes.

After eleven years at Saint- Étienne René Ferrier was sold in 1965 to the ambitious second division club SEC Bastia. With the Corsicans, he played in the next three years always to the rise - 1967 failed Bastia in the Barrages and had to be in the Cup competition in the quarter -finals after three games ( 1-1 aet, 0-0 aet, 0-1) the class higher FC Sochaux bow - which, however, until 1968, was slow in coming. The following year, led Ferrier - together with the beginning of the season -down as player-coach Rachid Mekhloufi - the league newcomer to a very respectable sixth place in Division 1; then he ended his professional career.

In the National Team

After his missions for the military appointed national coach Albert Batteux Ferrier in December 1958 for the first time to the senior national team. By December 1964, he played 24 international matches. In his last three games - under the Batteux successor Henri Guérin, previously Ferrier coach at AS Saint- Étienne - he was also three times as a team leader of the Bleus. The first European Championship (1960 ) he belonged to the French squad and was in the semi-final against Yugoslavia, one of the most memorable on the course of her games of the French, on the square: the EM -hosts led after initial residue at halftime 2-1 after 62 4-2 minutes even before the Yugoslavs met in the final quarter of an hour three times and moved in the final. Life after the footballer career

1969 René Ferrier returned back to central France and settled in Brive- la -Gaillarde, where he worked at Stadtwerke next to the ESA Brive trained. Later he lived for a time in Blois, where he also the local Amateurelf ( AAJ Blois ) supervised, then in Autun. Finally he found in Saint- Étienne, the city of his greatest footballing success, a job as a gym teacher at the local social welfare office. He died in 1998, in his 62nd year of life.
