Republic of Korea Army

The South Korean army or army of the Republic of Korea ( Hangul: 대한민국 육군, Hanja :大韩民国 陆军, English: Republic of Korea Army, abbreviated ROKA ) is the land forces of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea ( South Korea).

It is the largest branches of the armed force of over 560,000 soldiers ( as of 2004). The army is also the most important part of military force because of the mountainous topography of the Korean peninsula with a mountain infantry share of 70 % and due to the threat posed by the North Korean armed forces with their strong presence along the demilitarized zone ( 2/3 are permanently stationed at the DMZ).

The ROK Army is organized into three armies: the First Army ( First Army, FROKA ), the second army ( Second Army, SROKA ) and the Third Army ( Third Army, troka ). Current commander in chief of the South Korean army 's General Cho Jung- hwan.

The army is made up of the Army Headquarters, the Aviation Command and the Special Warfare Command, consisting of 560,000 soldiers, which are organized into 11 corps, 49 divisions and 19 brigades. It has 5,350 tanks and armored vehicles, approximately 11,337 artillery pieces, 7,032 anti-aircraft missile systems and 13,000 systems for infantry support.
