The Retezatgebirge the west of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania

The eponymous Summit: ( Varful ) Retezat

The Retezat Mountains (Romanian Munţii Retezat, ungar Retyezát - hegység ) is the main mountain range of the Retezat Godeanu group, the westernmost part of the Southern Carpathians in Romania. Important parts of the mountains are protected: it was in 1935 declared the first Romanian National Park, (about next Pirin and the Tatra National Park in Poland and Slovakia) represents one of the most important high-mountain protected areas in Europe outside the Alps.

The Retezat National Park is located in the west of the massif, in the center of the mountain range, from an altitude of min. 794 m to the highest point of the mountain, the Peleaga summit with 2,509 m height. A further 19 peaks reach heights of over 2,000 m, eg Papusa ( 2,508 m), Retezat ( 2,482 m), Varful Mare ( 2463 m), Custura ( 2,457 m) and Bucura ( 2,433 m). The Lacul Bucura in the center of the massif is the largest natural lake in the Romanian Carpathians.

The area belongs to the district of Hunedoara and thus even for intra- Romanian Transylvania ( Transylvania). The surrounding valleys form a sharp contrast to the embossed still very traditional mountain farming Mountains, as they are taken mainly from heavy industry. The region is a center of the Romanian coal production. About 60 percent of the working population work in the coal mines. Petrosani (Eng. Petro 's - previously also stone Thal ), east of the junction has the valleys is called the even part of the coal city. These coal deposits have long been known and in use (1788 - see Vulcan ). The coal is partially in the area of the Retezat Mountains - as in Vulcan ( Wolkersdorf ) Uricani or north of the mountain in Călan - used.

Geography

The Retezat Mountains form the central massif of the western end of the Southern Carpathians, one last alpine peak, from which the mountain slopes down toward the west and southwest. To the east it is separated by a deep cut from the central part of the Southern Carpathians, the mountain group Sureanu - Parang Lotrului. Specifically, it is through the valley of Strei ( Strell ) to the northeast separated out from the Munţii Sureanu and in the far east through the valley of the Jiu ( Shield ) of the Munţii parang. These valleys form one of the three major breakthroughs or transitions of the Southern Carpathians between Transylvania and Wallachia. South leads to the Oltenia.

In the south, extending in an east-west direction, the Retezat Godeanu group divides central to east draining valley of Lupeni ( gespr: magnifiers, dt Schylwolfsbach ), this mountain range - and the Retezat Mountains from the south Munţii Valcan. This valley branches off at Petrosani from the Jiu Valley ( Jiu Valley ) to the west. It is the valley of the Western Jiu- source flux Jiul de Vest, which there is with the eastern inflow - united - Jiul de Est, which rises between Şureaner and Parang Mountains.

Tourism

The Retezatgebirge is - in relation to the National Park - heavily developed, which can be seen in the numerous, well-marked trails and landscaped campsites. Wild camping is prohibited. The trails are sometimes quite difficult to commit because they often consist only of coarse boulders.

Camping options:

  • Cabana Pietrele: Located in the northern part, a lot of mosquitoes, muddy, makes an overall unkempt.
  • Lacul Bucura ( lakeside ): beautiful view of the mountain panorama ( Bucura, Peleaga, Judele ). There it can be narrow, since not a lot of room for the usually high number of visitors is available.
  • Poiana Pelegii: lots of room, located in the valley, next to a small stream.
  • La Fete, at cabana Buta: right on the creek; there are some good camping facilities.
