Return of Saturn is the fourth album by the U.S. ska group No Doubt; it appeared in 2000.

Genesis

Unlike the last album Tragic Kingdom, the music is much darker and relies more on lyrical texts. The music is influenced by The Cure. In addition, the album carries a dominant new-age style. About half of the album deals with the separation between the band bassist Tony Kanal and Gwen Stefani and their new relationship with the British singer Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush.

The development process began in 1997 in a rented house in Hollywood Hills. Tony Kanal there wrote the first songs. Work on the album designed very time-consuming and no real concept. Gwen Stefani took a long time to recover from the rigors of her career and was initially hesitant as it should go. The band eventually decided not to repeat the musical style of its predecessor, but instead to experiment more. First was Matthew Wilder, who also produced the previous album Tragic Kingdom, provided as a producer and the first work on the album began first with him in a studio in Los Angeles. Once, however, the work dragged on, Michael Beinhorn took over the production. Also got this problem with his schedule. Him then replaced Glen Ballard, who also completed the work on the album. Ballard was recruited by the manager of the group, in order to speed up the work and to ensure, that was a " radio hit " among the songs. 1999 there was a first sign of life of the group, the song New was used for the soundtrack of the movie Go. Also, work on the album was completed in July, but after two weeks, the band returned to the studio to Ex-Girlfriend and Simple Kind of Life record.

The name of the album refers to the 30-year period in which the Saturn orbits the sun. This is known in the U.S. as a Saturn Return. The title name serves as a nod to Gwen Stefani's 30th birthday. First, the album "Magic 's in the Makeup ", should read, then the name was changed to " Saturn Returns ".

Success

The album sold relatively well on the Billboard charts, it reached number # 2 The first Single Single Ex-Girlfriend flopped and failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100 Singles The other Bathwater and New reached only a moderate success. Four years appeared the remix (of the Invincible Overlord ) of Singles Bathwater, who was standing in the British charts on the Top20s. Although the album came to # 5 of the German album charts, none of the singles reached a higher ranking than # 34 (Ex -Girlfriend ).
