RÄ“zekne Municipality

Rēzeknes novads is an administrative district in the east of Latvia. The district office is located in Rezekne, although this city itself is not as so-called Republic City to the district.

Nature

The area is rural and is located on the Latgale heights and in the valley of the Daugava. On the territory there are also the two largest lakes of Latvia: The Luban Lake and the Rāzna Lake. The wet lowlands to the Luban Lake are home to a variety of rare forms of life, such as 224 different species of birds, 44 of which are endangered.

Population

The District consists of 25 municipalities of the former county Rezekne, which was dissolved in 2009. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia ). There are 32,130 residents reported ( 2009).
