Rhein-Ruhr-Marathon

The Rhine -Ruhr Marathon is a marathon run in Duisburg, which has been held since 1981. He is thus one of the oldest city marathon in Germany. The competition in addition to the classic 42.195 km race include a half marathon, a marathon for inline skaters and a marathon for wheelchair users.

History

As in sports budget of the city of Duisburg, a residual amount of DM 8,000 was awarded to the year 1981, the Eintracht announced boldly with the intention to complete a marathon on the legs. With the help of the sponsor Thyssen construction technology succeeded in the course as a city marathon, led by twelve Districts clockwise to raise - as second in Germany even after the Frankfurt Marathon, which in the spring of the same year had its premiere. The then Mayor Josef Krings personally gave the Sportpark Duisburg launched for first- event on 18 September 1981. With 385 participants in the target they stayed true behind Frankfurt and a week later started the Berlin Marathon, which registered each over 3000 participants, however, led the positive response to the premiere to that Duisburg from 1983 four-digit subscriber numbers were recorded.

1987 awarded the DLV his title fights to Duisburg, so with 3155 runners a Finisherrekord was reached. The event, however, had now assumed such proportions that they brought the organizing club Eintracht Duisburg to the limits of endurance. A decision on the future of the run has been postponed, as Duisburg for 1989 the contract for the Universiade got their marathon was organized as part of the Rhine -Ruhr Marathon; 1990, but then came the preliminary Off.

1991 and 1992 a second attempt was made with the Eintracht Duisburg as the host and the Duisburg advertising and Touristik GmbH, an urban daughter, as an organizer. The race with much larger city marathons such as the will take place also in September Berlin Marathon, however, was not to win, and then host and organizer finally moved back so that in 1993 and 1994 again, the marathon turned out.

1995 from Stadtsportbund Duisburg eV and the running club Duisburg eV, which still hold today the race, made ​​a fresh start, in which a wide sporting approach was followed. The direction of the barrel has been changed so that it counterclockwise now led through the city, and the date was postponed from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

2000 inline skating competition was added to the program, followed in 2002 by the half marathon and wheelchair marathon.

1987, 2000 and 2003, the German Championships were conducted in the marathon as part of the Rhine -Ruhr Marathon.

Route

The route is a circular route. The start is on the Kruppstraße at Sportpark Duisburg, from there it goes through Neudorf in the city center. During the half- marathon course turns from here south into the Dellviertel, the marathon route leads to the inner harbor and from there via the Kasslerfeld and the Ruhr to Ruhr place. After a loop through Meiderich it's all about the Friedrich Ebert bridge to the left bank of the Rhine. From Alt -Homberg it goes then south on Mountain Food and Hochemmerich to Rheinhausen. Over the bridge of solidarity, it then goes back over the Rhine to high field, where the half marathon route from the north joins at km 28. Shortly thereafter, the route turns off to the south and runs through Wanheimerort, Buchholz and Huckingen the southernmost point of the course and then on the Great Tree and Wedau aim at the MSV Arena.
