All species are plump, have short legs and live mainly underground. The incisors are enlarged gigantic. Because of the peculiarities of the dentition root rats have also been placed near the sandy graves, so in the porcupine relatives. Today zoologists assume that they are mice relatives; they are combined with the blind mice and reactive Mullen to the family of Spalacidae.
